10 Runway makeup trends for Autumn/Winter 2012-2013

Prepare yourselves a nice cup of coffee, or tea: this is a seriously lengthy read!

In this post, I've gathered my 10 favourite makeup looks from this season's runways. Feel free to take notes in order to replicate them: I can assure you, they're all wearable and stunning! Mind you, 6 out of 10 were created by Pat McGrath... The woman is a genius!

Ok, that was a lie: the last couple of makeup looks are probably runway-only material, though they can be easily adapted to something less scary/clownish.

Michael Kors: CHERRY RED CHEEKS
I love this kind of makeup. It's effortless, so easy to put together, while the cool-toned lipstick&blush combo brighten up the skin to make it glow!!! According to Marie Claire, the makeup artists at Shiseido said the rosy cheeks were meant to look like a "bloody, wonky flush, like after a morning of skiing, an hour in a hot tub or some good sex". At the risk of sounding too prudish, I find this makeup to look more like you've spent an hour out in the cold rather than having had good sex- but, I digress ;)

Point of story:
Dig out your cheek stains + cherry red lipsticks, and put them into good use!

10 Runway Makeup Trends for Spring/Summer 2012

I always find great inspiration in every season's runway makeup trends. It's so interesting to see how the big fashion houses utilize makeup and hairstyles to frame the "look" they want to achieve!

Sure, all these trends may as well serve to sell us more makeup- nevertheless, it's a convenient way to experiment with what you already have; and who wouldn't want a nice excuse to wear that hardly-ever-used lipstick that happens to be currently "on trend"?
I know I do ;)

Τhese are all the makeup trends from S/S 2012 runways that have caught my eye:

Michael Kors: ORANGE-BRONZY CHEEKS
Probably the most easy-going and natural makeup of the bunch. The cheeks look as if they've been burnt by the sun, which looks especially pretty on girls with golden blonde hair and green/blue eyes! I envy you, lucky gals...



Just Cavalli: GOLD EYESHADOW & BLUE LINER
That, I'm so gonna pull off come summer! Despite the heavy liner and intense gold eyeshadow, this makeup looks surprisingly fresh and youthful; maybe it's the drawn-on freckles the ones to blame? It also looks amazing on brown eyes- score!!!

Dsquared2: MESSY GOLD GLITTER
Not exactly wearable outside the runway, obviously... It does look incredibly sexy though, don't you agree? I would interpret it as a lived in, smudged eyeliner combined with messy and creased eyeshadow for that naughty rock-chic look.

Louis Vuitton: BIG FALSE EYELASHES
If the big fashion house that defines luxury managed to come up with a runway makeup dominated by false lashes AND make it look classy, that's all the motivation I need to get my first pair and start experimenting! Love the glowing skin and peachy nude lips, too.

Jason Wu: ORANGE-RED LIPS
Yay, I'm so thrilled I can shamelessly dig out my Vegas Volt lipstick and rock that trend!!! Lady Danger by Mac would actually be the perfect lipstick for this look, since it's bold matte lips what this trend is all about. It should look amazing on tanned skin!

Donna Karan: DEEP BROWN LIPSTICK
Another interesting trend this Spring/Summer, the brown lipstick on a bare face. I remember last year's Mac Surf Baby collection had a similar brown lipstick shade; back then I thought eww, how odd! I now admit it looks so sophisticated on girls with blue eyes. Only wish I could pull it off just as nicely!

Dolce&Gabbana: CAT EYELINER
That's actually how I wear my eyeliner: only on the outer top lashline and tapered to a flick. That's an excellent little trick if you have round eyes like me! God bless Sam from Pixiwoo for that Angelina Jolie makeup tutorial...

Rodarte: "STARRY NIGHT" SMOKEY EYES
Navy blue eyeshadow, yet again on trend. Want! James Kaliardos was inspired by the famous Van Gogh painting and used all Nars cosmetics. See the lavender-ish lip that matches perfectly the dark blue eyeshadow?

Gucci: EXTREME BLACK SMOKEY EYE
In my eyes, this is definitely a winter-appropriate makeup look. Either way, it's not for the faint-hearted: notice that the brows have been bleached to almost nothing, so as to intensify the darkness of the eyeshadow.

L.a.m.b.: ROCK CHIC WINGED EYESHADOW
Thick and straight "power brows", black eyeshadow winged to a sultry cat-eye... I simply adore this look! This look is combined so beautifully with the high bun and black nail polish AND leather jacket.

10 Runway Makeup Trends for Autumn/Winter 2011-2012

I've gathered up a few of the most inspirational makeup looks brought out by the big fashion houses for this A/W season.

    Spiky lashes with burgundy lips, as seen on Gucci
Can I just say that this is my #1 favourite makeup look from the bunch? And I'm so happy it looks gorgeous on brown-eyed girls, yayyy! I think it's genius that they've combined the vampy 3-dimensional lip with the girly doll-like lashes. Notice the soft haze of brown eyeshadow around the eyes, too?

    Charcoal smoked eyes with red lips, as seen on Diane Von

    Furstenberg

This is a much more wearable (and sultry!) version for wearing red lipstick. The charcoal shadow smudged only on the top lashline gives a certain clarity to the model's eyes. Which of these two trends would you go for?

    Luminous skin and pastel lips, as seen on Nina Ricci
Thick but softly defined brows accompany this makeup look dominated by the matte pastel shades on the lips that brighten up the complexion. As I've said before, I find it to be the ultimate modern recession-chic makeup; just like in the 40's era, where women invested in optimistic shades of red liptick and only that. Needless to say, I'm digging both of these lip colours and already searching for similar Mac shades!

    Camel eyeshadow with bubblegum pink lips, as seen on Donna

Ok, this is obviously not that wearable outside the runway- but the combination is quite interesting. Makes Barbie pink lipsticks like Saint Germain by Mac a bit more sophisticated, dare I say! With a little definition around the eyes and less eyeshadow, this look would be easily wearable even on daytime.

    Graphic eyeliner, as seen on D&G and Stella McCartney

The rest of the face is kept natural, so as to take the edge off the hardness of the eyeliner and give a youthful feel to the look. I think the models' allusive glance isn't coincidental: plain black eyeliner can be so sexy just by itself and it's extremely guy-friendly, as sometimes men can be intimidated byt a bright lip.

Ever since Lisa Eldridge did a tutorial on this makeup, I fell in looove! It looks pretty time-consuming though, probably would take more than 40' to a makeup amateur (like myself) to complete it; and time-consuming makeup makes me feel ever so uncomfortable each time... I don't know, am I the only one experiencing this? Still, it looks dead gorgeous!

    Metallic olive eyeshadow, as seen on Chanel
Not going to ramble about the much anticipated Illusions d'Ombre eyeshadows... Except from the fact I loathe the LE factor- I don't see a reason why they shouldn't be part of the Chanel permanent makeup collection! What do you girls think of this eyeshadow colour? I haven't played around with olive eyeshadow, but in these pics it looks pretty sophisticated and classy.

    Vampy blue smokey eyes with soft wine lips, as seen on Dior
Come on, would you expect anything less from Dior, even now that is Galliano-less? The alabaster skin and crimped hair also add to this modern 20's glamour. Again, it's probably not that wearable outside the runway; I wouldn't mind going around the house in this makeup, though! Sometimes I find it such a shame that women are so judgemental when it comes to other womens' makeup- but that's another story...

    Winged-out smokey eyes, as seen on Max Azria
The most modern approach on the smokey eye trend, this look is a cross between a cat-eye and a smokey eye. Skin is kept looking natural and lips completely bare. I always found difficult to recreate a modern approach on smokey eyes without reminding of trashy late 00's; in this look, it's interesting that there's no eyeshadow or liner on the lower lashline.

Finally, a makeup look appropriate for girls with shorter lid space like me! I cannot express my enthusiasm enough, as this "eyeshadow all the way" thing was a complete and utter no-no, up untill now. The model looks stunning in this pic, no denying about that (I'm also envious of her ombred hair!), but I still have some reservations about whether it looks ok outside the runway.
